Hi Im checking up http://www.symbian.com/phones/ to find which phones are having symbian OS. There is a list under Discontinued. What does that imply ? The Cos have stopped manufacturing those phones or are no longer supporting Sybmbian OS ? I would like to know the Symbian enabled Nokia Phones. Thanks |

If an old phone had (supported) some version of Symbian OS when it was made, the old phones will still continue to have Symbian OS for as long as it works (and even when the old phone stops working, it will still have the Symbian OS stored in the ROM - Read-Only Memory - which is where the OS is stored on both old and new phones).
So, the list on http://www.symbian.com/phones/ is valid and as far as I can see also complete (the only error is that "Coming soon" phones 3230, 7710 and 6680 are already available, but I imagine someone at Symbian will change the page when they realize that).

I thought that Series 60 will have Symbian OS - all Nokia models of 6xxx.
But 6100, 6200 etc (mostly Asian ones) are not having Symbian OS ?
The reason why Im asking all this is because I want to get a Symbian enabled Nokia phone (Asian compatible of course) and Im looking for cheapest model. I just need to upload whatever Im trying to do using the emulator here and see what happens in real. 6680 etc are really expensive.
Most here get the 1xxx, 2xxx and 3xxx phone but those arent even J2ME enabled - so what OS are these using - after all its these models that are skyrocketing here - not the 60s, 80s and communicator ones. Can I program for these models ? No emulator for these found in nokia forum though.

Many of Nokia's phones are Nokia Series 40. Here is a Nokia site that lists all the phones, their OS's and their Java compatibility.

Here is another link that explains the Nokia Series 40 platform...

Many of these devices support MIDP 1.0 with the newer ones supporting MIDP 2.0 and quite a list of supported JSR's.

All Series 80 phones (9210, 9210i, 9210c, 9290, 9300, 9500), and also the 7710 are Symbian OS based too.
"Series 60" does not mean that the phone model number starts with the number 6. In other words, a 6600 is a Series 60 phone, but a 6100 is Series 40. Series 40 phones are based on a compact Nokia proprietary real-time operating system, not a high-level OS like Symbian.
If you are specifically looking for Series 60 phones, see the list here:
