Hi all

Got a situation that you may have come across previously and have a workaround for.

While GPRS is active on my P800, incoming calls are not notified to the user.  I have seen on another forum that this also happens on Nokia devices so is probably a "feature" of the Symbian implementation and may be attributed to the fact that the devices are "Class B" according to the definitions at http://www.gsmworld.com/technology/gprs/class.shtml

This is a bit of a problem for streaming applications...!!!  Has anyone discovered a workaround so that incoming call activity can interrupt the data?

It's problem of GPRS itself. All modern phones don't notify about call if they are actively downloading something via GPRS, they notify only when in idle state.

Hi Michael,

Sorry but I don't agree with that completely.  I don't think it's a GPRS design issue but an implementation issue.  For example, Handspring have this to say on their website regarding their GPRS product (copied from http://www.handspringaustralia.com/GPRS/faqs.asp#apps2):

Q. What happens if I am online and I get a call? Can I browse the web while I am on a call or getting my email?

A. Treo will manage your data and voice calls so that it appears to be handling them at the same time but they are not operating simultaneously. For example, if you are getting a web page and the phone rings the browser will simply pause while you are on the phone and immediately resume the page load after the call has ended.

Also here, Nokia supports data/voice switching (http://www.nokia.com/support/tutorials/8310/english/faq.html) (this is for the 8310):

Q: What happens if my mother calls me when IÂ’m using GPRS connection to browse WAP pages?

A: The GPRS connection is suspended temporarily, when the network notifies you of the incoming call and if you accept the call (see indicators in the Main features of this module). The connection will resume once you reject or finish the call.

So it seems to be a Symbian issue...

No it's not a Symbian issue. You should call your operator and tell them to upgrade to Network Mode I GPRS network... It's the operators fault.

The networks can have multiple different modes of GPRS networks - if your operator has a Network Mode I GPRS network the calls will come through. If it is Network Mode II network then the mobile cannot receive calls when it is transmitting data - i.e. just fetching en e-mail. The calls will come through is you are idle but have GPRS connection up.

Last one is Network Mode III and on those networks if you have GPRS up - you cannot receive calls at all.

Quite a few networks are these notorius network mode II networks and I can see people blaming the mobile even though the problem really is in the network.

Ok this is great info Mr Guest, thanks...I much appreciate it.  I will approach my operator to see what the situation is and post the conclusion here.
