This is an off question, but maybe someone out there has had to find the answer to this.  Is there a site on the internet where you can see the market distribution of phones?  I.e. how many people own which phones, or how many phones have been sold.

I'm asking because my company is going to buy either a UIQ 2.1 or a UIQ 3.0 phone for development.  Without knowing any facts, I'm guessing that there are currently more people in the world with a 2nd edition phone than the 3rd edition phone.  That being said, there is a high turnover rate for phones and the 3rd edition phones are probably going to overtake the the 2nd edition phones within a few years.

Can someone point me towards a site with better information about this?

Thanks,
-euroq

Re: Phones and market distribution
Canalys, IDG, Gartner, ... Companies that specifically collect and publish (for a fee) market data information.

Actual device manufacturers rarely publish details about specific device volumes.

Major network operators also have the statistics/data on which devices "live" on their network. I haven't heard them publishing that kind of data, though.

If there were really popular web/WAP sites, the server logs would also have a good picture on which browses (= what kind of devices) are used to access the site(s). If you do not operate such a site, getting the data is again tricky. Wink
