Symbian OS and China

Symbian has an office in China. However I was under the impression (read it on a few industry analysis web sites a while ago, can't remember the links) that the Chinese government had ruled that 'commercial/capitalist' mobile phone OSs weren't allowed, hence Symbian OS, Palm, Microsoft were not allowed to be used. Instead Linux had to be used for mobile phones instead.
Does anybody know if this is correct or not? Presumably not otherwise why would Symbian have an office, but then why would these industry analysis web sites say otherwise? |

Either their interpretation or how you understood what they wrote is incorrect.
There are phones using Symbian, Windows Mobile, PalmOS, (and proprietary phone operating systems, too), made and sold in China.
That includes actual Chinese manufacturers (such as Lenovo) making Symbian or Windows based phones.

yes, I agree with the remarks above.
As I was based in China and I am a Chinese, I think what the post said is absolutely wrong. Chinese governent has never ruled and will never rule such restrictions on 'commericial/capitalist' phones. There is a potential consumer group which smart phones could target and Nokia, Sonyeircsson have delivered a number of such products to the mainland market. But I admit that sale scales is not as high as in European and American markets.
I was not aware that Symian has opened an office in China. if it is true, I think it is a good news for Chinese developer communities.
