Numpties and numpty alerts

I hope Eric doesn't mind, but I have taken it upon myself (when I have the time) to flag numpty postings.
Symbian and Symbian OS are British, as too is the word numpty. For those of you who have no idea what the word means -Â you'll soon get the idea. The reason I am doing this is because I am sick of the volume of posting on here by people asking for help (why is it always urgent!!!!! help?) in doing work which they should be doing. Don't get me wrong, I am all for helping people who have genuine questions and need help and assistance (apart from NumptyAlert I have a few other handles which I use on this site and am constantly answering questions and helping people, there are hundreds and hundreds of postings by me but enough is enough). No, it is the people who haven't tried that I am fed up with. Software development takes effort and thought, the people on here who know the answers on here have in the past put in much thought and effort and they can share their experience, but why should they if you can't be bothered in the first place. An example of a posting where somebody hasn't done any thought or effort beforehand, and thus will be flagged as a numpty posting, is where a large chunk of code is pasted and we're told it has an error and we're asked what the error is. And that's it, we're not told anything else. Debugging takes time and effort, why should we help you in this situation if you first haven't made any attempt to find out the problem for yourself. An example of what you could have done before you posted the code is to find out exactly what line in all those lines of code you posted caused the problem. This should be an automatic first step whenever you have a defect, why didn't you do it? Are you too lazy or just too stupid to realise this? If you're running your code on the PC then it's simple to step through the code line by line until you find the line causing the problem. Then if its an exception, or a leave or a panic, if you know which line it happening at you can probably also know what the cause is. If not, then maybe that's an example of when we can help you (but only provided you first looked up in the SDK what panic number x or leave reason y meant). If you haven't identified which line your code fails at? Why the hell not? If your code is running on hardware, you can still step through it depending on your version etc. If not then you can at least put some calls User::InfoPrint() or similar in your code to find the offending line. If you do this sort of thing you might find you don't need our help after all as chances are the problem will be obvious, maybe not, but if you don't even try to find out then why should we waste our precious time if you can't be bothered to think a little and apply a little effort first? There are many reasons why a posting could be a numpty posting but if you exihibit a total lack of brains, or effort, or inginuity or effort, to try to help yourself first then I'm sorry but you're too stupid to develop in Symbian in the first place as its a complex system and any help from us will be wasted anyway and the world is better off without your crappy software in it. Good luck and don't get numptied with your posting. P.S. If I reply to one of your postings it doesn't necessarily mean you are a numpty however, you may just be inexperienced and in which case I may try to guide you through what your thought processes should be and what you should be thinking or can try in order to attempt to find the problem for yourself - Teach a man to fish and he can feed himself. |

So you might be able to satisfy my curiosity: How did the number of "clueless" and/or "lazy" people develop over time? Was it better a while (1 year, 2 years) ago?

We have to think on a way to flag posts / posters so that useless posts are pruned automatically or anyother solution. WE may come with a response to that some day... maybe!

There isn't much to be added to what the OP posted, but please note that these sites should be regarded as a library, where knowledge and experience from different people is stored. Posting repetitive questions, or as "descriptive" as "Help me plz" is not the way to go. You end up being ignored and people's patiente has a limit. It doesn't help searching either; nobody likes getting a list of tens of posts repeating over and over again the same topics. Don't be redundant.
Hope this "movement" helps somehow to stop this "send me the code plz" attitude.
Cheers.

It seems to have been steadily increasing, especially over the last few / several months.

Although I have also noticed these "numpty" posts over time, I don't really bother with them. I'm sure that there are other people who will answer those questions. For example, it's a common practice that the question of a newbie (e.g. "how to set up the sdk?") is answered by another newbie. Let them do that work! It's also a lesson for them from which they can learn and become an experienced user. Personally, if I notice such a "numpty" question, then I simply ignore that post - I'm sure that somebody else will answer that question and if not, let that be the problem of "his/her numpty majesty".
Take care,

I know all this info is quite easily found from eg. forum.nokia.com, but it's not obvious that that's where people should look first. And even if they knew where to look, would they know what to look for, especially if they don't know what type of software they eventually want to develop?
I can't find this kind of (up-to-date!!) guide at NewLC Tutorials and Forums (the places one would normally look first). If such thing excists, it's well hidden. A new forum board called "Start Here" or "Beginners" containing a thread that clearly instructs newbies to go through certain steps before posting here would do the trick. Or if you feel NewLC is not the right place for beginners, direct them elsewhere.

The energy put in hunting "numpties" could probably be put in writeing some good tutorials instead, there is a lack of those
NumptyAlert begun a good thing in another thread, by listing "stupid" things newbies often do. More of that would probably be more helpful.
Although it could probably be written in a more instructive language
The increase in stupid posts is probably mostly due to increased traffic because of an increasing interest in symbian developing, now when symbian phones are getting more mainstream (wich is a good thing!
eric can probably confirm this from statistics...
I don't like stupid posts either... have done a bit of work trying to correct those myself, but in a slightly different language then NumptyAlert is useing

I've been smited several times so have decided to leave (pun not intended) so good luck everybody maybe the few tips I left behind as a legacy will be useful.
P.S.
Being a newby doesn't mean you are a numpty, and I have no objection to people asking beginner questions and helping them out , that is not the same thing as posting a numpty question.

Maybe we should set-up some more rewards to incitate you to participate a little bit more to the web site editorial work!
(btw, look at your karma: you've got the highest ranking! but of course your style could not please everybody...)

The style is just a bit too condescending sometimes though, and I think the energy spend would be more useful for new people if it was spend writeing good tutorials.
You definatly is knowledgeble enough to do it.
Not as fun though, I can understand

I Think u all here r great , very much knowledgeable n experienced. U r the ultimate resource n source of inspiration for the Newbies like me who sometimes posts Numpty.
But whatever it is, Newbies need ur valueable experience to learn this RTOS Symbian.
Thanx & Regards,
Amit.

Hey, and if you do get 'numptied' it's not because you are dumb. The brits just like to help you learn better english, that's all. I like n00b questions, because if the writter took 20 minutes to write the question, I can always give 20 minutes back with a proper answer, and not a one-line solution that fixes the problem but does not teach anything... so beware I never one-line
As for the tutorials, I am wqaiting for the beginning of a series on game-writting (a fun way to learn) to get reviewed and get cracking, on those TUTs.
