Grid icons question

Hi,
I know this has been asked a few times before, but I couldn't find a clear answer...

I am developing for Symbian Series 60 8.0a and I want to create a grid made up of images stored in the image gallery. If I can connect to the thumbnail directory (C:\\Nokia\\Images\\_PAlbTN\\) how do I then use these thumbnails as images for the grid? Do they have to be added to a mbm to use CreateIconL? Or can they just be converted into bmp's? Or is there an easier way?

AFAIK, Thumbnails are just JPEGs and can be threated as such.
