how to make list book fast

hi every body iam creating a dictionary and iam using Listbox to view words start with some characters
the problem is that
when character pressed then go to database select all words begain with this character and load it in list
this take long time to  words and draw it in list
is there any solution for this
the second problem is using mobile keybad when you need to type charactert b u type a first then event happen with both
i need solution for this also
