One day, I wish I could have a new DevCert

What is happening with SymbianSigned ? The site has encountered a lot of difficulties since several months and I am just amazed to see how they cannot get rid of them.

Commercial developers have avoided most of the problem since Symbian tried to keep their access up and running but hese time are now over. It is now more than one week than we couldn't just get new Developer Certificate. No matter what the site is saying about ACSID. And that is becoming a real problem. How could we explain our customer that no, we are not late and sorry if they cannot test the application we are writing for them ?

While the enhancement to the Symbian Signed process were a good thing. Being able to selfsign an application quickly and at a very low cost is a dramatic improvement to help deliver software updates. The process is now too heavy for simply developping and testing application.

Why couldn't trusted developper be able to selfsign their application too ? At least for a limited time and limited set of device. Would it be harmful to be able to have self generated developer certificate being able to offer basic and system capabilities for a limited set of devices and limited time ?

People having access to an ACSID should be able to develop and test without needing access to SymbianSigned website since Symbian Ltd is not able to offer proper access to it.

Sorry, no more free DevCerts. Sad

They can. However as Symbian do not have an office on every High Street the route to being trusted is to buy a Publisher Id.

> Would it be harmful to be able to have self generated developer certificate ...

The problem is with end users getting certificates & signing code. Users find the need for this confusing, and do not understand that when they sign the code they are trusting the application with their personal data, to spend money on network access/phone calls/messaging/...

For further potential harm I refer the honourable gentleman to the recent discussion on NewLC about hacked software -

The Symbian Developer Network has a new FAQ addressing the recent changes:
