gnuBox and Nokia 3230

How to configure your PC to work with gnuBox

Requirements

-  gnuBox for Nokia 3230
-  Internet connection (I was using AOL Dial-In for this tutorial)
-  A Bluetooth dongle with WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software
-  Analog X Proxy
-  mRouter Software v2 or v3

If you own other Symbian based Smartphones, you can use the installed mRouter. With Sony Ericsson you just need to double click on this icon (My P900)image004.gif. If you own an A9250/A920 you can launch the Desktop suite.

If you don't have these softwares installed, you can download for free, the mRouter 3 from the Intuwave website.

Step by step installation: Step1

On the Nokia 3230:
-  Install gnuBox_3230.sis
-  Launch gnuBox
-  Some configuration text will be displayed:

(Loading CommDb settings)
ISP ‘Bt' Not found

-  Chose Debug -> Dump Full CommsDB and wait till the confirmation dialog box appears (about 10 seconds)
-  Option->Exit (don't do an Application Switching)
-  Now we are going to add an Access Point (Settings->Connection->Access Points->Options->New access point->Use default settings).

image008.jpg image010.jpg image012.jpg

Fill the configuration with these settings:

Connection Name Bt (be sure to type this name correctly)
Data Bearer Data Call
DialUp Number 321

image016.gifOnce done: Go to Options->Advanced settings and enter these settings:

Phone IP Address automatic
Primary Name Server 0.0.0.0
Second Name Server 0.0.0.0
Proxy serv. Address 169.254.1.68 (This is the fixed IP address used by mRouter)
Proxy port number 6588

We are going to take the default port number used by the AnalogX Software. Of course if you are using another HTTP Proxy Software, change this value to your port number

Step 2

On the PC:
-  Launch the mRouter (either by clicking these icons :) You should see this icon in the tray bar:
-  Check that the Bluetooth COMs shown in the mRouter Properties (right click on tray Icon->Properties) are corresponding to the Bluetooth Serial Port COMs from the Bluetooth Software.

image020.jpg image022.jpg

-  Before trying to init the serial connection, be sure the devices are paired.

Step 3

On the Nokia Phone:

Now it's time to configure the Nokia Phone in order to connect to our mRouter and proxy through Bluetooth:
-  Launch gnuBox
-  Options -> Install -> Create Records

image024.jpg

-  Options->Exit
-  Relaunch gnuBox
-  Options->2box Bluetooth->Serial Port

image026.jpg image028-2.jpg

image030.jpg- You will be asked to choose a Bluetooth Device.

  • This message dialog appears: “Do you want to require encryption?”
  • Confirm with OK

-  Go to the Web application
-  Choose an Internet URL
-  You will be asked to connect
-  A message box “Connecting to BT” will shortly appear
-  On PC side the Bluetooth icon will turn to green
-  Congratulations: now you can surf with your Nokia 3230 !

On the PC:

You will notice that the mRouter icon is moving and turning into a squared wave, when you are surfing with your Nokia 3230 image032.gif.

Questions and answers

Q: The Bluetooth Tray Icon is green, but on the phone there's a dialog box showing Connecting via ‘Bt'. The dialog box doesn't disappear. Why?
A: This means that you haven't launched the mRouter software on PC side. The phone is continuously searching the access point with the ip address 169.254.1.68. You should now launch the mRouter software. Once you did it, don't forget to launch your HTTP Proxy.

Q: I'm getting a “Web connection time out” although I have correctly launched mRouter. What could be wrong?
A: If you have launched the mRouter, your phone has established the Bluetooth connection. To retrieve HTTP packets or to surf, we need a proxy. We set the proxy (in Phone's Connection Settings) on port 6588 (used by AnalogX Proxy). To solve the problem, you just need to launch your HTTP Proxy (in our case AnalogX Proxy).

Q: Nothing is working / I succeeded in letting gnuBox work, but now nothing is working and I receive a message “Already in use”
A: You can try to close your Web application and to reconnect. If you still have problems, try to exit gnuBox and to close the current connection manually (Connectivity->Connection Manager->Bt).

What might also help is to temporary set the Bluetooth connection to Off (Connectivity->Bluetooth->Bluetooth->Off) and re-put it to On.

If really nothing is working, you can try the third solution: restart your phone (although it shouldn't help a lot, perhaps just to re-init the Bluetooth phone's services) and delete the Bt access point. Then follow the Step to step instructions to reload the CommDB.

Hello

I'm quite surprised that the tutorial did not worked for you :-( Here are some possible solutions:
-  When you say that you tested mRouter and it works, do you mean that BT Connection is working, do you have the line "Bluetooth COMxx connected" when checking the connections in mRouter?
-  Have you correctly set the ports ?
-  Which version of mRouter are you using ?
-  Are you connecting directly to the internet or through a corporate network ?
-  If you have a firewall (Zone Alarm or the XP one), be sure to autorise AnalogX Proxy (port 6588) and your mRouter
-  Try to dump the connection preference to see if everything is ok and to check that the connection table is not damaged
-  Normally when a connection PC<-> mRouter <-> Mobile phone is partially made, the mRouter tray icon should move.
-  What sometime can help is to reinstall the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software and to install the P900/P910 Connectivity instead of the mRouter 3 from Intuawave. Be sure to reboot your PC after each installation.
-  Try to completely uninstall gnuBox and to recreate the records

Please let me know if it works ! MatD:-)

Hi all! I've got a 3230 with v.4.0537.0 fw. I tried the process with the latest mRouter and AnalogX Proxy, and the result was an "invalid login script" message. In my case, I figured out, that my phone wanted to connect on an another opened BT COM port. That COM port (COM9) was opened for an ActiveSync connection, and it did not recognize my login script (and everithing else :D). So i disabled the ActiveSync on COM9, and opened it for Serial connection. After all, i made a reboot, and all problems were solved :).

I hope, my post could help you, and please, send me an email, if you succeed.

> gnuBox and Nokia 6681

hi, i did everything the instructions said and when i try to connect to the pc it says "Failed to connect to Nokia 6681, Reason: The m-Router service could not be found on the device or Bluetooth may be disabled. Error Number:80042000

the phone's bluetooth is on so what could be the problem? thanks guys

> gnuBox and Nokia 3230

hi everybody! i have nokia6680, all working nice on windows xp, but it doesnt work on windows vista??!!! anybody have a solution???! thanks

> gnuBox and Nokia 3230

Me again...... I think it would be best if it possible for someone to write a program doing exactly that. I mean some combination between gnubox and an HTTP browser and to be fully automated. Now if there is some experts out there, can they tell if that is possible or not?

> gnuBox and Nokia 3230

Hi There, Thanks a lot for this, i am able to connect the m-router with mobile, and the m-router color turns blue as soon as it connects to my mobile. But when i try to go to any web address on my mobile, it throws error "Web:No Gateway Reply". Could you plz help me with this,

Many Thanks,

Deepesh

> gnuBox and Nokia 3230

This means that you have configured no proxy, mRouter won't be able to connect to it and then to load the requested webpage. Be also aware that the S60 Webbrowser may sometime show up a message box althought there is no apparent reason. Try to browse to www.google.com, you will get some very strange behaviour especially with message boxes. The only way to solve this behaviour is to re-enter and validate the URL
