The software that is needed for a specific S60/Symbian OS release/version (.e..g., S60 3rd Edition/Symbian 9.1) to work on/with a specific device/hardware. E.g., the adaptation layer code will be different for different Nokia hardware (e.g. N73 hardware vs. N93 hardware) vs. Samsung hardware, all based on the same S60 release/version.
