Advantages of being a Self Signed Certifier

Besides Signing our own applications can anybody tell what are the basic advantages of becoming Self Signed Certifiers. Can we sign others applications also after becoming Self Signed Certifiers?

Does anybody know what could be the processes to be followed to match to their requirements in the field of Software Development process and Development QA process.

Can anybody put some light on these things?

Does anybody earlier have succeeded or atleast attempted to get Self Signed Certifiers?
