Sony Ericsson has just announced in Barcelona its first Windows Mobile powered device: XPeria X1. The deviceis one of the sexiest Winddos powered device so far and the combination of the full qwerty keyboard and touch panel interface makes it a lot more usable than some competitors like LG KS20.
“XPERIA represents the first brand that is truly borne from within Sony Ericsson. It represents our vision for a premium, energised communication experience,” said Dee Dutta, Head of Marketing, Sony Ericsson. “This launch, and the announcement of the X1, further strengthens the overall Sony Ericsson brand and places us at the forefront of mobile convergence.”
“Our vision for the XPERIA X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile Web communication and multimedia entertainment within a distinctive design,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, Head of Portfolio and Propositions, Sony Ericsson. “XPERIA is our promise to think foremost of user experience and to deliver the premium experience – anytime, anywhere, anything, with anyone.”
Some technical specifications:

- quadband GSM / GPRS / HSDPA / UMTS / Wifi support
- 110 x 17 x 53 mm, 145 gr
- 3 Inches, 800 X 480 pixels, 64K colors screen.
- Up to 400MB integrated phone memory and microSD support
- 3.2 Megapixels camera with 30fps video recording capabilities, autofocus and 3X digital zoom.
- FM Radio with RDS support
- aGPS support
- Touchscreen based user interface
The phone also includes a full Microsoft suite (Exchange support, Internet Explorer Mobile, Outlook and Office Mobile). Competitors like Symbian based Nokia E90 or HTC Touch or TyTn, now have another contender - let's hope that the XPeria panel UI is nicer to use than HTC TouchFlo one.... which is not so sure as rumors say that HTC is beyond this phone as well. The Apple iPhone is still playing alone in its "sexy and usable internet tablet with phone capabilities" category but it now get a little bit more competition of more opened device in the "sexy UI" category (I still reserve for the "usable" part as Windows Mobile powered device have been quite disapointing in this area so far IMHO and I couldn't play with the XPeria X1).
The device should be available in selected countries in the second half of 2008.
