Native development on the Android platform shouldn't be considered as a hack in the near future. The forthcoming release of the Android NDK will open official door to native code for applications. Or more exactly, Java application will be able to access some native code and libraries.

An early look version of the next version of the Android SDK (v1.5, cupcake branch) is now available. This version introduces some new APIs targeted at soft keyboards, home screen widgets, speech recognition, etc... and it also includes the Google Maps API that were part of the code SDK.

To keep up to date, I've recently built a new version of eeedroid from git tree to compare with the previous one : eeedroid-0.0.20090209 (which also work on eeepc1000 or 900HD as some users reported). This new build is booting in 24 seconds ... Would that make Android suitable for netbooks ?

HTC has just released a firmware update of the Android Dev Phone 1 (ADP1). Check the HTC website for instructions for flashing your phone. This firmware is fully compatible with Android 1.1 which was released to retail phones some times ago. You'll find more details on this version in the ]Android 1.1 Version Notes. It should also restore access to priced apps in the Android Market.
