Symbian Foundation will be set-up by Nokia, but after that it will have open membership for any organisation. I personally don't think a joint ownership by competitors is the best way to go anyway, as it introduces a lot more red tape, slows down any platform development and generally gives platforms owned by a single company too much of an advantage to catch up (just look at OpenGL vs Direct3d. OpenGL started out as light-years ahead of Direct3d, but they couldn't respond to new developments as fast because OpenGL was a committee run specification and now Direct3d is on a level with OGL). In order to compete against other OSes like Windows Mobile, Symbian really needs to have just one driving company. As long the Foundation takes the advice of it's members on board for development rather than just pandering to Nokia, it should go in the direction that other manufacteurers and developers want (although this is a big if, I admit I'm a bit of an optimist at times).

Nice initiative but I would like to see “Symbian Foundation” as an equally owned by Sony Ericsson, Motorola, NTT DOCOMO and Nokia, not by single entity because in future this may hinder unified open-source platform goal.

[inline:1 left] Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS™, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.
