IDC forecasts that worldwide shipments of smartphones, will surpass 390 million units, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.9% for the 2009–2013 period. In a market that was once dominated by a handful of pioneers, such as BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile, newcomers touting open standards and intuitive design and navigation have garnered strong end-user and handset vendor interest.

Mer is not a Maemo fork but the result of joined efforts between Maemo, Ubuntu and of Debian (deblet), alpha version can be installed on the OpenMoko FreeRunner. Watch the video demo....

Native development on the Android platform shouldn't be considered as a hack in the near future. The forthcoming release of the Android NDK will open official door to native code for applications. Or more exactly, Java application will be able to access some native code and libraries.
