Re: j2me List

I think not. MIDP doesn't have such API. Not even necessary that pressing 1-9 will result in a selection from the list - it's implementation dependent. Not sure about DoJa but, probably, also nothing like this.

In general I guess MIDP UI sucks and they all prefer to draw everything on their own Canvas-derived.
This way you will have full control over key presses and everything. But this would be more difficult.

However, I might be wrong. You can check at http://java.sun.com/ it seems not related to Symbian...

Re: Running midlet in background on motorola Z8 (UIQ 3.1)

You haven't, then, made a backup of the card contents to a PC? Apparently not, but from now on, I assume you're going to.

If it was easy to circumvent and get to the data, such a password feature would be rather useless in the first place. You can try asking http://www.ibas.com if they can help (depends also on how much you're willing to pay). In case they can, out of general interest, let us know how much it costs, and also if they managed to do it, should you decide to pay.
Re: Can I install a midlet in a .sis onto the motorola Z8?

I had tried this very long back on S60 phones. I dont recall all the details, but I was not able to get the required results. Vaguely I remember it happened to be something to do with the way the device handled installations. In older devices it worked(as people on forums had claimed) but not on any of the newer devices. It presumably had something to do with a singular installer in the newer devices and it being engaged in the process, it was unable to cater to the other. Thats all I remember now

Use a phone which has fonts that contains Chinese or Japanese language characters (phones sold outside Chinese or Japanese speaking countries/regions generally do not come with such fonts).

Generally, Java applications do not need to be signed on Symbian. Some network operators (carriers) might require it though.

I don't think you can do that with J2ME. You can receive specific messages sent to a specific port, but not read the Inbox as you wish. Try C++ (if you're targeting a Symbian phone).

Re: File Encryption

It depends which device(s) you mean. Some won't have any E-drive in the first place, others might have protected files/directories not accessible to the Java VM (your MIDlet) and there can also be device where the access is not restricted. There is no universal truth in this matter.

What you mean:

From Java, all files/directories on the device are not accessible in any case.

So, i can't read a file content on e:\ drive in J2ME?

Re: File Encryption

For direct file access from J2ME, a prerequisite is JSR-75 support.

Per device, at least for Nokia devices, you will find it listed here: http://forum.nokia.com/devices (I don't know anyone that has extracted the data to a single list of devices with JSR-75 support, but in general you assume it based on the S60 or S40 version where the support first appeared, and then assume that all devices based on that release and later will still have it).

From Java, all files/directories on the device are not accessible in any case.
Re: Control channel in bluetooth

I'm sorry, but I have next to no experience with J2ME and likewise no experience with Bluetooth.

It's just like this: From my *general* knowledge about Symbian versus J2ME I am pretty sure that a native Symbian program would be a much better choice for the implementation of something like what you want to program. At least from technical aspects, leaving aside other aspects like more effort for learning or similar
