Trolltech Extends Qtopia Family of Mobile and Embedded Products
Trolltech today announced the general availability of Qtopia Platform. The newest product from Trolltech in the Qtopia 4 Series joins Qtopia Core, which was made available in January 2006.
Building upon the features of Qtopia Core, Qtopia Platform includes a host of features that help developers create multi-application Linux-based devices. Qtopia Platform is ideally suited for these consumer and other non-consumer devices because of the rich multi-media user experience that can be created.
The market for consumer electronics where user interfaces plays an important role in customer adoption -- such as mobile phones, personal media players and specialized applications -- is seeing explosive growth due to Linux and application platforms like Qtopia which make development of these devices faster and easier.
Qtopia Platform inherits the power and advantages that customers have come to expect from Qtopia. Qtopia Platform also includes the open source SQLite database, allowing easy replacement with any other SQL compliant product.
Qtopia Platform also features an initial release of the Qtopia Safe Execution EnvironmentTM (SXE), which builds upon the inherent security features of Linux. SXE will combine the security benefits of a "sandbox" on the device with the benefits of a native application approach. It will include Linux controls on access to files and to capabilities such as network connections. SXE will also manage access to device resources like SMS delivery and the display. Trolltech is fully committed to delivering a reliable infrastructure for trusted downloads of native applications.
Additionally, Qtopia Platform provides application management including multi-tasking and quick launch start-up. Qtopia's plug-in framework offers a development environment for new features including modem drivers, media codecs and input methods. Integration of Java applications is also supported and allows for a native Qtopia look and feel.
"We are pleased to deliver Qtopia Platform to the market," said Haavard Nord, CEO Trolltech. "Qtopia offers developers unmatched speed and flexibility for creating the most innovative devices in the most efficient manner."
