Symbian is releasing Ruby for Symbian OS to the Open Source software developer community. Ruby for Symbian OS brings the power of the Ruby programming language to the Symbian ecosystem under the terms of this Licence Agreement.
The package includes the Ruby source code (based on Ruby 1.8.5), bundled in a straight forward launcher application. An initial prooof-of-concept module has been added also. Documentation and example code will be added in the future as the project evolves.
Ruby for Symbian OS is being released in advance of an upcoming series of articles about Runtime Environments on Symbian OS and it is Symbian intent to extend the language by suggesting a mobile framework for dedicated libraries. While the Ruby language will give you the computation and technical playground, the mobile libraries which you can create will be the actual enablers to a variety of applications such as games, tools, PIMs and much more.
Symbian will provide the project with an initial proof-of-concept (POC) library that can do:
Rendering
Messaging
Persistence
The POC will be available for S60 and UIQ. In the meantime, you can get the initial Ruby for Symbian OS package here. More information is also available on Symbian developer web site.

Ruby for Symbian OS
yes but the obvious question is Why!
an interpreted language, well ok, we all know Symbian is OO overkill and basically a load of tosh which is effectively closed to 3rd party developers due to poor documentation, incomplete SDKs and lack of foresight from 'academics in the real world'. But why not something more recognisable as Basic. Surely this is not just a feeble attempt by Symbian to expand the frontiers in the face of the impending MS onslaught.
Having developed in Symbian for almost ten years and contracted at extensively at Symbian, Nokia and Sony Ericsson and seen the mess Symbian really is.I'm afraid it has to be a resounding YES.
